Chinese President Xi Jinping has demanded all-out efforts in putting people’s lives first as the country’s northeast combats the worst floods in more than a decade. President Xi asked local authorities and armed forces to save people’s lives.
On Monday, 85 people were confirmed dead and 105 are still missing. 3.7 million people have been affected by the floods, with direct economic losses totalling more than 16 billion yuan.
Official data shows the floods have destroyed more than 60-thousand houses and forced the relocation of 360-thousand people. Hundreds of hectares of farmland have also been affected. Weather forecasters say rainfall will ease today, but another downpour is expected to batter the region in the coming three days. Local authorities have been warned to take precautions.
